Are you Born to Style?

Everyone has friends who work in fashion and beauty related jobs, and by and large these folks are happier than the people who work at the bank, or have their own stores, or have IT jobs in office towers downtown. Men and women that become personal stylists are usually pretty happy with themselves – they turn into honest reliable friends who are quite fulfilled because they feel satisfied with what they do everyday, which is to help other people look and feel their best. And they can get wealthy too, just like the rest of them – there is a lot of money to be made in this line of work. The truly gifted stylists do indeed feel like they were called to the job from a higher power – they feel like they were born to style.

Born to Style is a video contest that you can enter and perhaps win your entire tuition (about $10K of high quality education) at one of four different Aveda Institutes across Canada.

Devin is now a professional stylist at Canada’s busiest and most beautiful hair salon, Civello on Queen Street West in Toronto. There is another terrific story on the Aveda Institute Canada Blog, entitled Catching Up With Winnipeg’s #BornToStyle 2012 Winner, Robyn Thompson

The 2013 Born to Style Hair School Scholarship Contest is on again, brought to you by Aveda Institute. The competition is the exact same structure as last year and I should have written more about it here sooner because the open submission window closes March 1st 2012.

This social media contest was created to help talented art students who have just learned hair styling, or perhaps do not even know yet the basics of cutting hair, start bold new careers as hair stylists. The competition is designed to help these ‘undiscovered’ artists find themselves by becoming hair and beauty stylists, and of course there is a very good chance in each and every city in the world that they will also find a satisfying career at the top of the food chain. There are four full scholarships available – one for each of the AVEDA Institutes in Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver.

AVEDA Institute Canada challenges young people to step up and prove they are Born to Style again in 2013; applicants need to show contest administrators they deserve to be included in each city’s top five finalists group. They need to display on video what they will do when asked to perform in a live hair styling competition in front of important guests, and be judged by celebrity hair stylists in four cities across Canada.

There will be four hair showdowns, one in each city Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver. Stay tuned to the social media channels in each of the cities for the dates.

Follow along on social media,
In Toronto, keep an eye on application updates by liking Aveda Institute Toronto Facebook Page and @Aveda416 on Twitter

Are you a startup fighting hard to succeed? There are hundreds of such businesses in all sizes small, medium and large all over the world. Regardless of the size of your business or your niche industry, one thing that is common with all startups is the challenges faced by them. No business can escape these challenges and these challenges in fact only make your business strong provided you manage to fight your way through these challenges without succumbing to the pressure.

One of the drawbacks with startups is that the business owner or owners would like to do all by themselves in their enthusiasm. They show very little interest in getting professional assistance in setting up their business and in managing their business. This is where everything starts. The initial struggle itself discourages most entrepreneurs. If you too are one such entrepreneur don’t give up. There are different ways of winning and achieving your goal. You just need to be flexible so that you don’t resist the opportunities that you have before you.

As a startup you should have very reliable clients acquisition strategy upon which you can build your business. Unless you have experience in strategic clients acquisition you cannot expect to turn your business into success overnight. Even experienced entrepreneurs have to put up a very strong fight. If you take a closer look at the most successful businesses in your own niche that can be categorized under your size of business you will notice that they have not relied totally upon their own skills and abilities. You too should not mind getting external help as long as your help comes from reliable quarters.

One of the top business consultants that has been assisting startups of your size in strategic clients acquisition is Sheamus J. MacLean. Working with business professionals like Sheamus J. MacLean will help you deal with the initial struggle every startup has to go through in the most resilient manner. You will not have to worry about succumbing to the pressure of competition and other factors that hamper the growth of the startups. As a highly experienced business consultant Sheamus J. MacLean will help you steer through the challenges in the most effective manner.

The biggest challenge that you will face as a startup will be in the form of clients acquisition. This becomes such a big challenge because there are already hundreds of players in the industry competing for their share of clients and you are one more element that adds on to the pressure. Your lack of experience in the field will only double the pressure. However with the help of Sheamus J. MacLean a renowned business consultant, clients acquisition and content marketing will no more be a nightmare even if you are just a startup.

You will be able to position your brand in a very decisive way and take your competition head on with the guidance of Sheamus J. MacLean. You will have access to practical clients acquisition strategies that will work for your industry when you choose to work with Sheamus J. MacLean.

It’s summer time, and many of us are thinking hard about sealing up the house and taking off in the car. I had a fantastic time in the Maritimes two summers ago and decided to make a point of writing about travel in Canada. In the summertime, travel in Canada is extremely kid-friendly thanks to a huge amount of National Parks and scenic attractions. So without further ado, here are five Canadian vacations that come highly recommended by me. Hopefully you’ll be inspired to pack up the minivan, the kids, the husband, the cooler, the maps, the mosquito repellent, etc. as well!

Niagara Region

Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls are two of Ontario’s main tourist attractions. While the city of Niagara Falls itself has become somewhat of a tacky tourist trap, the nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake is quiet and quaint and surrounded by award-winning wineries. Take the kids to see Niagara Falls; go to Niagara-on-the-Lake for some romance.

Fundy National Park

This enormous national park situated in New Brunswick is complete with beaches, hiking trails and wildlife, and is just a short distance from the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Fundy’s famous Flowerpot Rocks.

Vancouver Island

A Vancouver gold buyer knows that the real jewel of the west coast is Vancouver Island. Indeed, many fortune seekers set out to the North from Vancouver and surrounding area to try to make their fortune in the Klondike gold rush of 1898. Surrounded completely by Pacific ocean, the island hosts mountains, true Canadian wildlife like orcas and bears, and Northern rain forests. Capital city Victoria offers a taste of Canada’s English heritage, while remote Tofino (left) offers otherwordly scenery and first rate surfing.

Prince Edward Island

The birthplace of Anne of Green Gables must be one of the most charming places in the world. Getting there over the giant Confederation Bridge is an adventure in itself; once you get there you will find time can slow down as you shake the city out of your system in this pastoral paradise which is also the birthplace of Confederation.

The Cabot Trail

Located on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, the Cabot Trail is a breathtaking scenic drive around spectacular views of the Eastern coast. This is Canada as you’ve never seen it before–many travelers compare the rugged coastline scenery with that of Scotland. Be sure to stop and camp at Highlands National Park.

Fertility problems are the sort of problems that most couples just never suspected they might have. Buying a house, managing schedules and household finances are some of the other stresses that newlyweds face; unlike fertility issues, however, these difficulties can be solved through dedication and hard work. Problems with fertility can affect people in a profound way, particularly couples who are successful in every other aspect of life (health, career, happiness) but can’t seem to make a baby, no matter how hard they try; in such cases, some couples begin to regard themselves as failures! It is difficult to know when to call a San Diego fertility clinic in such cases because there are so many variables that affect the ability of a man and woman to become pregnant. Below you will read about when the right time to look into fertility is:

How Long Should You Wait?

In North American society, prospective mothers are generally encouraged to try getting pregnant for at least a year before consulting a specialist. This is particularly the case for women who were using the birth control pill prior to getting pregnant, as the pill has been known to prevent fertility even after it has stopped being ingested, sometimes up to six months. For women over the age of 35, however, there is less time to waste. If you are over 35 and haven’t been able to conceive for six months, it may be time to see a specialist.

Contributing Health Issues

Perhaps you have a damaged ovary or your husband is going through chemotherapy; health issues such as these can affect the likelihood of conception, as well as a healthy pregnancy. If you are already aware of health complications that may be preventing you from conceiving, be sure to tell your doctor right away that you are hoping to have a baby, and they will refer you to a specialist.

Fertility Tips

You are most likely to get pregnant when your menstrual cycle is consistent. Therefore, crash dieting or binge eating will not improve your chances in any way, as weight loss and weight gain can affect the menstrual cycle. Your partner may also want to get his sperm count tested, and speak to a specialist on ways to increase the numbers if they are low.

In conclusion, there are many solutions for couples having troubles conceiving. Concentrate first on your overall health, and do give yourselves some time to try making babies naturally. With so many options, conception is usually possible.

Our skin is one of our most precious organs, and the health of our skin is usually determined by the health of our internal body. With summer on the way we begin to think more about the health and appearance of our skin; as we expose our arms and legs in tanks and shorts we become more aware of how sensitive our outer layer really is, and how our lifestyle is reflected in the glow (or lack thereof) of our skin. Luckily, dermatology today is better than it’s ever been; not only is it possible to reverse the process of aging on the face using exfoliants and wrinkle eye cream, there is also more of an emphasis on the overall health of the body in relation to skincare.

Below are some tips that should help you take care of your skin and promote that natural glow that every woman has within.

-Wear sunscreen. You should always wear sunscreen when exposed to sunlight, even in the winter. Buy a tiny tube of at least SPF 15 and just carry it around with you in your purse. There are many high quality SPF lip glosses available as well. If you’re going to have prolonged exposure to the sun, wear SPF 60 and reapply every few hours. Sun damage to the skin is irreversible.

-Quit smoking. Studies have proven what most casual observers already knew: smoking causes visible skin damage. Furthermore, the repetitive mannerisms of smoking (inhaling the cigarette, squinting the eyes to avoid smoke) cause wrinkles around the mouth and eyes. Even further, cigarettes are very expensive nowadays. Quit smoking and reward yourself with a massage or a day at the spa.

-Consume antioxidants. Antioxidants have been proven to remove toxins that produce aging from the body. These can be consumed in pill or vitamin form, but you can also get them in your diet: green tea, pomegranates, cranberries, berries and fine dark chocolate are all good sources of antioxidants. If you drink a cup of coffee in the afternoon, try switching to green tea.

Here’s an ancient Ayurvedic cocktail for beautiful skin: warm up a glass of milk with half a teaspoon of turmeric and a bit of honey. Light a candle, relax and enjoy. Spend more quiet moments alone in appreciation and stress will begin to visibly leave your face.

A serious injury is something most people hope that they–nor any of member of their family and friends–have to suffer. As I know from experience, the only thing worse than seeing a loved one in pain is seeing their discomfort amplified by huge medical bills they were unprepared to afford. Morbid or not, accidents happen, and it’s best to be prepared for the worst. For example, if you are living in Toronto or just outside of it, you may want to get to know the business practices of personal injury lawyers in Mississauga so that, in case of injury, you won’t have to waste any time finding the right attorney. A physical injury can have a lasting impact on your life, but with timely intervention from a personal injury attorney, you can focus on recovering while resting assured that your lawyers are fighting for your rights, medical and otherwise. Below are some tips that should help you if you’ve been injured and think you may require legal assistance:

-Seek medical treatment immediately

You need to find out right away how serious the nature of the injury is, whether you will require surgery or other costly procedures, or if it will force you to take time off from work. Determine the expected cost of treatment.

-Keep correspondences with your insurance company in writing

Most insurance providers want to offer a settlement right away to close your case as soon as possible. This is why it is so important to seek medical attention first; some unfortunate cases have ended with a patient accepting a settlement, whether from a work or car accident, only to find out later that they will suffer chronic health problems as a result, which, due to a settlement already being received, will not be covered.

Hire a personal injury lawyer immediately if:

-You have been asked to provide documentation of the state of your health before the injury occurred

-Your insurance company has offered you a settlement you are not happy with

-There is a dispute over who is at fault for the accident

If there’s one skill that we all, in the Information Age, could probably brush up on, it’s the art of communicating ourselves, our businesses and our passions online more effectively. Whether you like it or not, if you have a Facebook or Twitter page, you have created a brand: yourself. Every decision you make with that account will reflect on you personally. As a blogger, this is always something that I keep in mind–whether I’m promoting a brand I like, writing out a recipe, or sharing an anecdote about the wonders (and woes!) of parenting–even though I’m self-publishing, I’m still publishing. I can’t tell you how to get thousands of hits on your website each day–you’ll need a full service marketing agency for that–but I can tell you how to build your online presence and…omniscience.

Network

Join other social networks besides Twitter and Facebook; there are lots out there: Pinterest, Digg, chime.in, zoomit.ca are some of my favourites. Get social in some of these spaces and you might be amazed at the reception your brand receives, often directing readers back to your blog, or myspace or website. These platforms are more interactive than a blog format, and give you insight into the effect your brand is having on others. Another way to network is to experiment with forums. Pick a topic you’re interested in or just join a local forum and build a solid reputation there, which leads me to my next point–

Keep it Appropriate

Think carefully before you publish something that could be controversial. One of the great things about the internet is that anyone is entitled to publish anything they please, but the internet doesn’t forget, and neither do readers, when they read something you posted that was disturbing or negative. One ill-timed rant can turn a casual reader off your page forever, so take a moment before you hit publish to reflect upon whether or not what you’ve just written is true to your overall vision.

Build Community

You can’t expect to gather hordes of readers for your blog if you don’t take the time to support other bloggers, leaving comments on their page or referencing them on Twitter. Participate in online discussions and reach out to other bloggers with similar interests. There is a niche for everyone’s brand on the internet , and community comes with that.

As the wife of an entrepreneur and mother of two, themes of leadership are prevalent in my life. But what is the difference between a good leader, and a great one? A good leader is able to direct others to meet a targeted goal or deadline with satisfactory results. They are essentially in charge of the people who follow their lead, and take ultimate responsibility for the final results. A great leader, however, does more than simply get the job done: they inspire their company, students or children to achieve more, raise productivity levels, and, in the best case scenario, to acquire leadership skills of their own. Not all of us are born leaders, and even those who are can benefit from a leadership development program. This specialized training can help already seasoned leaders develop the skills and knowledge to provide effective, exceptional leadership in any situation or organization.

You may consider yourself a great leader and role model, but there is always improvement to be made. At leadership development training you will focus on:

Mentoring - Mentoring allows you to directly communicate what you know about leadership to others. Mentoring improves teaching and communication skills, and teaching is a great way to strengthen the knowledge you already have. Some executives have been leaders for so long that they have become out of touch with their employees; mentoring is a way to encourage communication and a sharing of ideas from both parties. Coaching your peers is an invaluable way for you to enhance your leadership qualities while improving your faculties for listening, answering questions, and conversing with others in general.

Personal Coaching - Yes, you’re already a leader, but how well will you handle constructive criticism? When people in positions of leadership allow themselves to be coached by their peers at leadership development training, it can open up a whole new level of awareness into how they have been approaching leadership thus far. Awareness is the beginning point of change and improvement. At first, you might find yourself responding negatively to a peer’s suggestions for improvement, but the experience will leave you better equipped for a time when those roles are reversed, and you are about to offer criticism to an employee yourself.

Professional Networking – There really isn’t any textbook definition of leadership; new strategies are invented all the time and there are countless ways to approach managing and leading. Connecting with other like-minded professionals in leadership development training will give you the chance to share your stories of leadership with others, and to hear what has and hasn’t worked for them. A good leader gets people to listen, but a great leader listens to others, and learns from them.

While I like to think of myself as a committed Do-It-Yourselfer, there are certain events in life for which I feel I need expert advice before I even begin, and the process of selling and buying a new home is a fine example of an occasion where one should feel zero guilt about hiring professional help.

In search of the perfect real estate lawyer North York I did a lot of research which I am now happy to share with my readers. My family and I have been living in our suburban home for 12 years, and much has changed in the market since:

1. Resolve to make finding a real estate lawyer the first step of your move.

The importance of legal council cannot be understated when making what is perhaps the most costly purchase of your life. Selling or buying a home requires serious decision making and the guidance of a legal professional will reinforce to you the gravity of the choices you make.

2. Find out how your real estate lawyer structures their fees.

Some real estate lawyers work on a flat fee structure and some do not; you may be in conversation with one or the other. If you choose a lawyer who charges a flat fee structure you’ll know exactly how much their expertise will cost. If you are dealing with a lawyer who does not charge on a flat fee structure then be very firm in asking for a complete invoice of charges. Agree on a price before you agree to services.

3. Familiarize yourself with your lawyer’s practice.

What type of real estate law does your lawyer specialize in? Commercial? Residential? Agricultural? Choose a lawyer whose specialty matches up with what you’re selling or buying. If a real estate lawyer has been working exclusively in a certain residential area for 10 years, you can bet his/her office and administrative staff is well versed in their work as well.

4. Find out what services are included.

Will your lawyer look over your mortgage documents for you? If you want this done and don’t specify upfront you might find yourself with unexpected fees on the bill. Is your lawyer, or is their assistant, going to be able to give you answers to your complicated questions? Will you be educated somewhat throughout the process, or left in the dark about the particulars? You may need to shop around until you find a lawyer who can offer you exactly what you’re looking for at an agreed-upon price.

5. Can your lawyer’s office close the sale electronically?

It is now possible to register land electronically throughout the entire GTA. This is not the most important tip in the article, but in the digital age we all know how much more convenient it is to work online rather than wait in a line. Plus, if your lawyer’s office hasn’t upgraded to be able to close electronically, it might reveal a need for them to be making upgrades to their practice in general. Again, this is a minor piece of advice. Be sure to hire a real estate lawyer–legal documents are very complicated.

Well you know me, I love food…

And the CRFA’s (Canadian Restaurants and Foodservices Association’s) annual show at Exhibition Place is for those who love food. I spent a very happy Monday morning meandering (I confess this word annoys me sometimes but it really seems fitting here) from booth to booth and–at the risk of sounding melodramatic–from wonder to wonder.

I haven’t decided yet whether or not it was a blessing that I ate a wholesome breakfast of oats and strawberries this morning. I didn’t want to overeat, and it worked–I only grazed on healthy foods I really wanted to try. But now that I’m home I’m starting to regret my restraint…those desserts…and those cheeses, and even though I’m vegetarian the meats looked tasty, and…would 10 AM really have been too early to sample a nice beer? I’d like to think it was all a moveable feast I could carry around with me in spirit and in mind, but something tells me I’m going to have to physically stop at the cheese shop tomorrow after I go to the bakery.

Apart from the food, which was glorious and beautiful, there was another focus to the event, and that was technology–whether it was new equipment for the kitchen, new software for restaurants or a presentation on how social media can spread the word about your restaurant (or anything really!) online.

I caught Rob Campbell AKA Smojoe give a talk at high noon about navigating the internet to your best possible advantage using storytelling funneled through all varieties of free online mediums. As a blogger, I found the talk extremely useful, and Campbell was an engaging speaker (and a little eccentric!) which made it entertaining. I learned a lot about what Google considers to be relevant in terms of web searches. Someone told me recently, I think at a Reiki healing event I attended with a friend, that you usually walk away from a presentation having learned one key thing to take home with you (let’s hope so!) Rob Campbell’s presentation today left me with a lot to think about. In fact, I’m even blogging differently.

I guess in the end the oatmeal was a good idea–there’s no way you would have found me in a CRFA lecture room for business management consulting at lunchtime otherwise.
